In
1998, a new device was introduced to the Texas
Hill Country for recycling Cedar (juniper)
The Cedar Eater is a (200 HP) Hydrostatic Tractor, Franklin mounted with a dual drive hydraulic, fixed tooth, shredder by Fecon,
called the “Bull
Hog”
The Cedar Eater has been used successfully in
the Hill Country for cutting
medium to very heavy juniper,
mesquite, and other hardwood trees and brush. It also works great for recycling of piled dead
cedar.
Any size cedar can be reduced to the ground as
mulch!
The mulch is shredded to varying degrees of fine
to coarse pieces that interlock as they fall.
Mulch depth varies with the density of the cedars.
The mulch will hold
runoff in heavy rains. Grass and other plant life will sprout in and through the mulch, growing from seed in the cedar needles beneath the recycled cedar.
The Cedar Eater can operate on varying terrain
and leaves a very slight footprint and minimal
ground
damage. Cut
rates will vary from two hours per acre up to
eight hours per acre depending upon
density.
REGROWTH OF CEDARS
"The Cedar Eater mulched hundreds of cedars at the Broken O Ranch in 2001 to 2003. We had also used a bulldozer to clear some of the land during the same time. Four years later we are faced with an unbelievable amount of regrowth cedar resulting from the bulldozing and very little from the Cedar Eater. "
