Cedar Clearing for Native Grass Growth in Texas

Pasture Reclamation Through Cedar Clearing & Mulching.

Cedar Eaters performed a pasture reclamation project involving the clearing of dense cedar growth estimated to be 15 to 25 years old. The project cleared roughly 75 acres, targeting invasive cedar and opening an 3.5-acre hunting area. The site was characterized by shallow soils mixed with rocky ground. These conditions, combined with the heavy cedar canopy, had left the property with only minimal grass growth.

Native grass was present under the dense cedar canopy, but the shade and competition from the invasive cedar tree never allowed those natives to flourish.

Six months post cedar mulching, tremendous native grass growth took place across the reclaimed pasture. Notably, no new native grass seed was introduced. The recovery came entirely from the dormant native grasses that had been suppressed under the cedar, now free to thrive beneath the protective layer of beneficial mulch left behind. The property has since sold, and the selective cedar clearing and pasture reclamation was a contributing factor.
