Wildfire Pasture Restoration with Forestry Mulcher.
Cedar Eaters performed a pasture restoration project involving the clearing of burnt vegetation after a wildfire. This wildfire recovery project cleared roughly 120 acres of heavily burnt vegetation on an 1,800 acre ranch in Central TX. The site had a mixture of soils located that ranged from sandy bottom land to caliche rocky hilltops.
The vegetation consisted of mainly Cedar, Live Oaks, and Post Oaks that had been burnt. We waited for a year after the burn to monitor the recovery of the vegetation affected by the fire. This allowed plenty of time for some vegetation to return but also compacted the Ash allowing for better visibility when performing forestry mulching in the burn scar.
We mulched all dead vegetation and left stands of new regrowth hardwoods that were returning. We selectively removed the dead from those stands of new regrowth. Once finished, the mulch left behind creates a nutrient rich protective organic layer over the starved sterile ground. This organic material will decay and help with reviving the land but it will also slow erosion during heavy rains which will help with retaining top soil in the future.
We went back a few years later to view the results of our land clearing and restoration efforts. The land owners were thrilled with the results and the impact it has made since the fire devastated a large portion of their property.
