Hand Crews for Clearing Brush and Trimming Oak Trees

Our hand crews are unbelievably effective at transforming properties–faster than you can imagine! They use chainsaws to cut cedar and underbrush, which can either be fed through a wood chipper or laid out in a path for our mulching machines to shred. We can also leave the piles, if you choose, for wildlife habitat (common for those with wildlife tax exemptions), for terracing the land, or to be burned at your leisure. We believe mulching the cut vegetation is the best way to go because of the environmental benefits the mulch provides. The layer of mulch left behind preserves your land by preventing soil erosion. Moisture and nutrients are sealed in beneath the mulch, thereby helping native grasses and desirable hardwood trees to flourish.

We Understand Oak Wilt Prevention is Important to You

Oak wilt is a disease caused by the fungus Ceratocystis fagacearum that affects oak trees across the Hill Country. Although the disease typically spreads through root-to-root contact, it can (in rare cases) be spread by a type of beetle that carries fungal spores from an infected tree to other trees nearby. Any recent wounds (between 24 to 48 hours old) are vulnerable to this type of transmittal.

That's why our hand crews take every precaution when dealing with trees infected with oak wilt or when oak wilt is known to be in the area. We "paint the oaks" by spraying and sealing all of the wounds we create to prevent the disease from spreading. Don't hesitate to talk to your job supervisor about any oak wilt concerns.

The Grubbing Method Minimizes Soil Disturbance and Helps Avoid the Loss of Topsoil and Grasses

Cedar Eaters of Texas offers a newer, more environmentally-friendly solution to eradicate your unwanted perennial vegetation. Grubbing is a relatively new concept that is growing in popularity due to its many advantages over older clearing techniques. Cedar Eaters' grubbing method uses two mechanical applications to extract the ENTIRE TREE–roots and all. We have a large excavator (nicknamed the Grubber) with a patented grubbing bucket and retractable thumb that can handle large mesquite trees and other types of vegetation that grows back, even when cut down to ground level. We also have a patented, skid steer-mounted grubbing bucket dubbed the ROOT-N-ALL^®. Both of these applications have helped Cedar Eaters with the successful removal of thousands of acres of perennial vegetation--including mesquite, huisache, black locust, retama and even cactus!

The Mesquite Grubbing Excavator

We primarily use the mesquite grubbing excavator (nicknamed the "Grubber") when dealing with large mesquite trees and other types of perennial vegetation. This machine is capable of extracting mesquite trees (whose trunks are up to 24 to 30″ in diameter) out of the ground; however, we typically recommend keeping mesquites that are that size or bigger. We recommend that the grubbed vegetation be laid out in what we call "wind-rowed piles" to be mulched at a later time; however, we can also pile the vegetation for wildlife habitat or to be burned on a rainy day by the property owner. Minimize soil disturbance caused by root-plowing and avoid loss of topsoil and grasses. Steer clear of nasty chemicals that require repeat application and use the environmentally-friendly "grubbing method" instead. Your property will thank you!

Cedar Eaters minimizes GROUND DISTURBANCE WHEN COMPARED TO DOZING AND ROOT-PLOWING

The Skid Steer with ROOT-N-ALL^®

The ROOT-N-ALL^® grubbing attachment was actually designed by two of Cedar Eaters' employees to satisfy customers that needed smaller mesquite trees grubbed. This attachment mounts to a skid steer and has two hydraulic pincers that help stabilize the tree while the grubbing action is being performed with the V-blade bucket. When dealing with smaller mesquite trees, this process is considerably less invasive than even our excavator. When the grubbing is complete, we can detach the ROOT-N-ALL^® and switch to a grapple attachment to pile the grubbed vegetation. During this process, much of the dirt gets raked back into the holes providing a ready-to-use pasture capable of supporting livestock and wildlife immediately. The ROOT-N-ALL^® is a universal attachment for skid loaders that is available for purchase by private landowners through H&W Attachments, LLC.

Cedar Eaters of Texas has specialized in cedar and brush clearing in the Texas Hill Country for nearly two decades. The mulching method has vastly become the "new norm" in liberating landowners from their cedar and brush problems, because of its minimal impact on the land as well as its environmental benefits.

Each of our Cedar Eater™ forestry mulchers are equipped with hydraulically-powered cutting heads that quickly reduce trees and brush into beneficial mulch. The cutting heads are 8 feet wide and rotate at 1800 RPM, shredding any material into a variety of textures, from coarse to fine, interlocking as it falls. Wildlife Habitat Restoration

If you qualify for wildlife management, the native wildlife population must be produced for human use which may include food, medicine, or recreation. Please Note: The size of your property can dictate the kind of wildlife management options that are available to you. For instance, not all wildlife species can be managed for on every property. To determine what kind of management plan you should apply for, we urge you to contact a local wildlife biologist. If you don’t have one in mind then we would suggest you contact a member of the Plateau Land & Wildlife Management team at Plateau Wildlife. Their team is very knowledgeable in determining what kind of native species are indigenous to your land and they can assist you with the design and implementation of your plan to be submitted to the state.
Pasture Restoration

The cedar trees removed and mulched allows the stocking rate of pastureland to greatly increase and the ranchers can profit. You can speed up the process by broadcasting native grass seed over the mulch. However this typically won’t work without rain. We suggest letting the area “rest” meaning no grazing for a year after we have performed our mulching service. This gives your native grass seeds that are currently on your property a chance to settle in and thrive in their new recovering environment. Rainfall aids in the recovery of grass, you can see immediate results with grass recovery even with a little amount of rain. During our drought years we often noticed that the areas with greenest grass on the property were located in the areas with mulch on the ground. Due to the extraordinary ability of mulch retaining what little moisture we were getting.
Watershed Reclamation

Removing cedar tree infestations does not only increase the amount of water hitting the ground and staying in the ground; but, specifically mulching cedar trees (as opposed to other forms of cedar removal) helps increase water levels even more. How is that? Well, the layer of cedar mulch seals in moisture and prevents it from being able to evaporate into the atmosphere, leaving all of that groundwater in the, well…ground. That way, quality hardwood trees like oaks can get the water they need to thrive. Native grasses can rebuild their populations, improving water quality and soil retention. Over time, landowners will see a rise in the level of their streams and ponds, as their drainage basins (sometimes referred to as watersheds and defined loosely as the area that drains into an underground water source) are able to recharge themselves in a natural and healthy way.

Government and Military Work

Cedar Eaters has successfully completed numerous land clearing projects for military installations across Texas. In 2008, we began clearing over 1,700 acres on a 5-year project with Joint Base San Antonio-Camp Bullis under contract with Texas A&M AgriLife Research. In 2014, we were sub-contracted to clear training sites at McAlester Army Ammunitions Plant in Oklahoma.
